Schmiedekunst

The Schmiedekunst skill is used to create weapons and armor using metals and other materials available in the land of Skyrim, or to improve existing weapons and armor..

To begin improving the Schmiedekunst skill, talk to Alvor in Flusswald. The tasks he gives appear under "Sonstige" in your Quest log.

Description of Rüstungen

  • Lederrüstung: created by using the Pelz of animals that you have killed. By using the Gerbgestell at most blacksmith workstations, you can turn pelts into Leder, or turn leather into Lederstreifen. Leder is needed to smith or improve Lederrüstung while Lederstreifen are needed to create all types of armor.
  • Eisenrüstung: created by using the previously mentioned Lederstreifen in combination with Eisenbarren at the blacksmiths' Schmiede. Eisenerz is required to create Eisenbarren. Eisenerz can be mined from ore veins scattered throughout the rocky landscape of Skyrim through use of a Spitzhacke. Eisenerz in your inventory can be refined at a Schmelze (such as the one at the Whiterun blacksmith) to be transformed into Eisenbarren.
  • Stahlrüstung: Steel Armor requires Stahlbarren in addition to Eisenbarren and Lederstreifen, In addition you will need to have invested in the base perk of the Schmiedekunst skill tree. Stahbarren are created by smelting Eisenerz with Corundumerz in a Schmelze.
  • Elfenrüstung: Elfenrüstung requires the Elven Schmiedekunst perk in the Schmiedekunst skill tree. The base material for all Elfen armor is Veredelter Mondstein which is also used to improve existing weapons and armor. To craft the gilded armor you must also have Quecksilberbarren.
  • Zwergenrüstung: Dwarven Armor requires the Dwarven Schmiedekunst perk in the Schmiedekunst skill tree, which additionally requires at least 30 proficiency in Schmiedekunst. In order to get the required materials, you will need to track down broken dwarven artifacts to smelt into barren; a good place to search for these are the various Dwemer Ruins scattered near the Morrowind border (eastern Skyrim).
  • Vulkanglasrüstung‎: requires Veredelter Malachit, a green and blue barren, to smith and improve.
  • Ebenerzrüstung: Ebenerzrüstung requires Ebenerzbarren and the Ebony Schmiedekunst perk (80). Ebony can be found in mines close to Orkische strongholds. Ebony is the only armor that requires only Ebenerzbarren to make.
  • Deadrische Rüstung: requiring ebony and a Daedraherz, this armour can be crafted after the level 90 Schmiedekunst perk is added.
  • Drachenrüstung: There are two types of dragon armor: Drachenplatten and Drachenschuppen. Drachenplatten is a heavy armor crafted from Drachenknocken and Drachenschuppen. Drachenschuppen is a light armor crafted from Drachenschuppen.

Tips

  • You can pay Eorlund Grau-Mähne at the Himmelsschmiede to train you in Schmiedekunst after joining Die Gefärhten, assuming you have enough gold at your disposal.
  • Having difficulty acquiring raw materials? Enemies occasionally carry metal erze or barren.
  • Some areas such as the summit of Hals der Welt or various mines scattered about Himmelsrand contain large concentrations of ore veins.
  • You can purchase a selection of barren and leather from any smith.
  • Jewelry is another good way to quickly increase your Schmiedekunst skill. Combined with the Transmute spell to quickly obtain Gold and Silber and crafting rings for double the effect earns more experience per unit of Eisenerz than producing iron goods and requires no additional ingredients.
  • You can buy a whole stock of Eisenbarren and Lederstreifen, (or acquire them by other means) to make lots of iron daggers to quickly raise the Schmiedekunst skill and grow a few levels at the same time. When you have finished, you can sell the daggers to get some of your money back.

Improving Armor and Weapons

  • Grindstones are used to improve Waffen - You can sharpen your weapons for extra damage. This requires Barren and a maximum of two upgrades can be applied to a weapon with the applicable Talent unlocked.
  • Workbenches are used to improve Rüstung - You can upgrade armor for extra armor rating. This requires Barren or Leder. Armor can be upgraded to six levels of quality with the applicable perk unlocked. In order, these levels are: Fine, Superior, Exquisite, Flawless, Epic and Legendary.
