This quest begins when the Dragonborn either reads Sinderion's Field Journal found in Sinderion's Field Laboratory or picks the first Crimson Nirnroot both found in Blackreach.

If the Dragonborn picks some crimson nirnroot before finding Sinderion's Field Laboratory, this objective is added to the Quest Journal.
Collect Crimson Nirnroot in Blackreach (30)[]
After reading Sinderion's Field Journal it becomes clear what amount of Crimson Nirnroot is required and what should be done with it.
The crimson nirnroots only grow in Blackreach. There are more than thirty there (44 actually), but they are spread all over the location and do require a fair amount of searching to find. However, this does provide the opportunity to also mine Geode Ore Veins which are also only found there.
Bring 30 Crimson Nirnroot to Avrusa Sarethi[]
Once the Dragonborn has thirty crimson nirnroots these should be brought to Avrusa Sarethi at her farm, to then receive Sinderion's tome The Nirnroot Missive and Sinderion's Serendipity as a reward.
