Astrid is the leader of the Dark Brotherhood at a time when it is on the brink of disbandment. She controls the last known sanctuary anywhere in Tamriel, in southern Skyrim. She has not been deemed worthy by the Night Mother to be the Listener, therefore she and the rest of the Sanctuary are completely out of contact with her or Sithis. She has allowed the Five Tenets to go unobserved and runs the Sanctuary on the basis of 'Astrid's way or no way'.
So far, the other Brethren have shown complete faith in her, until one day Cicero, a survivor from the Cheydinhal Sanctuary who has gone quite mad, arrives at the Sanctuary with the unhallowed remains of the Night Mother. He is her designated Keeper as there is no Listener. Cicero questions her leadership and throws the Sanctuary into chaos.
Astrid is the wife of Arnbjorn, a Nord warrior who is also a Brother in the Sanctuary. He is also a former member of the Companions and the Circle, and therefore a Werewolf.
Later, it transpires that Astrid colluded with the Empire and she as well as most of the Brotherhood are killed in a raid by Penitus Oculatus agents.
