Farkas is one of the members of the Circle of the Companions. Like other members of the Circle, he is a werewolf, as the Dragonborn finds out during Proving Honor. You meet him along with Aela and Ria fighting a giant outside of Whiterun. His brother Vilkas is also part of the Circle.
Farkas is a master trainer in Heavy Armor.
