Fast Travel can be used to get from one place to another which has already been visited. It cannot be used to get to places not previously visited and cannot be used from indoor locations. The color of the map icon distinguishes unvisited areas from those previously visited. Unvisited areas have predominantly black icons, whereas visited areas have predominantly white icons. See the examples below:

The name of this method of transportation can be misleading as within the game, the time taken to reach the destination is not any shorter, it only appears instantaneous to the player.
