The Great Collapse was an event that struck Winterhold. The cause of the event is unclear, but the effects are all too obvious. Much of the city of Winterhold collapsed into the sea, leaving just a handful of buildings on the outskirts and the College of Winterhold standing. The people of Winterhold resent the mages of the College for this reason, believing that they were the cause of the disaster or that they could have prevented it from occurring. From the mages' point of view, however, this disaster was as unexpected to them as it was to Winterhold, the College surviving by virtue of ancient protective magics.
