Malyn Varen is a Dark Elf who was a former instructor at the College of Winterhold. His research into the nature of soul gems led to his exile after his experiments led to the death of one of his students. He had been trying to find and use Azura's Star to render himself immortal because he was dying of an incurable disease, but went mad.
His skeletal remains are actually inside Ilinalta's Deep though his soul is encountered inside Azura's Star.
