Mercer Frey is the current master of The Thieves' Guild. He leads their operations from beneath the city of Riften inside the Ragged Flagon.
He took over the guild after Karliah murdered the previous master, Gallus Desidenius. It was later revealed that he was Gallus' murderer, and that he framed Karliah for the murder.
Mercer is also directly responsible for the decline of the Guild by stealing the Skeleton Key from Nocturnal's shrine as well as all of the guilds riches from the vault. This blocked the path to the Evergloom and prevents Nocturnal from blessing the Thieves with the uncanny luck they need to play their trade.
He possesses the key to the Guild Vault — the other two being with Brynjolf and Delvin Mallory.
